Thanks to a little bit of rain, everything at Flatwoods Park is greening up, even though the lakes are still dry. The chicks from the first nestings are looking pretty healthy and finally beginning to fledge. We have a total of 38 eggs, 54 chicks (all BB), & 57 fledglings (47 BB, 10 CC).
We saw 27 bird species today including Northern Bobwhite Quail (calling all over the park), Mourning and Common Ground Doves, a Common Nighthawk, a Killdeer. Immature Little Blue Heron, a Great Egret, a Turkey Vulture, a Red-shouldered Hawk, Downy, Red-bellied, and Pileated Woodpeckers, White-eyed & Yellow-throated Vireos, Blue Jays, American & Fish Crows, Carolina Chickadees, Tufted Titmice, Brown-headed Nuthatches, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Carolina Wrens, Eastern Bluebirds, Eastern Towhees, Common Yellowthroats, Northern Parulas, and Northern Cardinals. We also saw a Black Racer Snake for the first time in ages, and we saw 3 Gophor Tortoises.
With the little bit of rain, we are beginning to see a lot more blooming native plants such as the Bantam-buttons and Camphorweed or Saltmarsh Fleabane.
