By Shauna Justi, Newsletter Editor

Hello everyone!

I would like to formally introduce myself: my name is Shauna, and, from this letter on, I will be taking over for Sandy Townsend as Newsletter Editor. I joined Tampa Audubon in November of 2025 as both a member and as Assistant Newsletter Editor. I am from South Florida, but will be moving to Tampa this August to start my Master of Social Work degree at the University of South Florida in pursuit of becoming a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I became interested in birding about a year ago when a friend introduced me to the activity. I have always had an inclination towards our natural world, so it did not take long for me to become obsessed with the activity.

Currently, I have 143 species and counting logged on my Life List in the Merlin App. My favorite bird is the Swallow-tailed Kite, but my spark bird was the Purple Gallinule – I still remember seeing it on my first official birdwalk, captivated by the way the sun reflected off of those iridescent feathers, and from that moment on, I knew birding was going to become my new favorite hobby. Outside of birding, I enjoy spending time with friends and family, reading, watching movies, taking care of my house plants, playing board and card games, and participating in any activity that involves being outdoors. I am excited to officially take over as Newsletter Editor and help provide content for all of my fellow birders in this wonderful community you all have welcomed me into!

With excitement and gratitude,

Shauna Justi
