Environmental Portraits: Utilizing the Bird’s Environment to Create a Birdscape

One of the key ingredients in creating a unique photo is habitat and context. That is, where is the subject? How does the background and habitat add context in the photo? However, the most common bird photos are tight portraits, usually with the bird on a perch, with little to no habitat in the photo.

While there is nothing wrong with this style of image, it does lack context and it misses the opportunity to tell a wider story about the relationship between the bird and its habitat. In November’s Photo Club, we’ll discuss how we might use a bird’s environment to create beautiful landscape photos featuring birds as the main subject – a birdscape. Feel free to share your birdscapes and close-up portraits so we can compare and contrast these different compositional styles. Share your favorite bird and nature photos at our November meeting.
