Sandy Hollenhorst will share experiences and information about the locally significant bird nesting colony located on islands in a lake in the upscale Bonita Bay community in Southwest Florida.

She will review the annual nest counts conducted by the Macias Wildlife Society, include background on how the nest counts got started with the aid of Audubon Florida’s Coastal Islands Sanctuaries staff Ann Paul, and how these counts continue today. The program will include a movie filmed in Bonita Bay by John Pinti about the history of the nesting islands titled The Accidental Rookery.

Sandy Hollenhorst is President of the Macias Wildlife Society of Bonita Bay, Inc. She is a Florida Master Naturalist and volunteer naturalist at Audubon Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary. Sandy will present the Powerpoint on the Bonita Bay Rookery.

John Pinti is Treasurer of the Macias Wildlife Society. He is an avid photographer, videographer and drone pilot. John produces movies on an array of topics for Bonita Bay. He wrote and directed the movie The Accidental Rookery, which will be shown during the program.

Help Tampa Audubon protect the environment. Bring your own re-usable plate, utensils and drinking glass. Then, take them home, wash them and use them again! We will have disposable plates, utensils and cups in case this isn’t convenient for you.
