eBird Mobile Just Got Better!

Updated: Aug 22

eBird recently made improvements to its mobile app. The list of improvements was compiled by our field trip coordinator and techie expert Mic McCarty. To learn more about each feature, click on the links:

Easier, more accurate distance tracking in eBird Mobile

Birding with the eBird Mobile app just got better. eBird Mobile will now calculate the unique distance you traveled, accounting for backtracking or repeated sections of your route. Gone are the days of manually adjusting your distance after retracing your path—the app does the work for you!

This update offers the most accurate and consistent estimate of your distance yet. Just make sure the start and end points of a track reflect where you started and finished birding, and the app will take care of the rest.

Introducing Checklist Media

New eBird Checklist Media lets you share a richer context of your birding through habitat images and sound recordings. In addition to birds, you can now add media that showcases landscapes, soundscapes, and unique moments in nature.

Checklist Media helps preserve your birding memories while providing meaningful information to birders and researchers worldwide. Add checklist media the same way you upload photos and sounds of birds. You can also include images and audio recordings from other animals you encounter.

Merlin Bird Photo ID Check in eBird Submissions

Now, when you submit photos in eBird for a given species, Merlin will examine the photo to see if the bird is correctly identified. I recently traveled out of state and submitted many photos to eBird. When I accidentally uploaded a photo to the incorrect species, the web page had a pop-up message asking if the bird was correctly identified. I had dropped it to the wrong species. This is a mistake that may have taken weeks, months or even years to identify in the recent past.

Edit Your Checklist on the App

You can now edit your eBird checklists after you submit them using your smart phone app! This was previously not possible. To edit a checklist, go to the app, checklists, select submitted, and simply edit the checklist! To delete a checklist, you must go the eBird web site. Deleting a checklist is not possible using the app.
