The bluebird nesting season on the Flatwoods Park Bluebird Trail is slowly winding down with only 2-3 weeks left.?? We have a total of 154 fledglings (143 BB, 7 CC, 4 TM), with 3 chicks and 9 eggs remaining. See attached spreadsheet for details. Also attached is a picture of the 2 chicks in box F30.??
In addition to the bluebirds, I saw tufted titmice, 2 ruby-throated hummingbirds in the native garden, 9 wood ducks, 3 little blue herons, (one was a juvenile that had a mixture of blue and white feathers, called a calico), 2 downy and 2 red-bellied woodpeckers, a red-shouldered hawk, a?? great blue heron and an alligator. I've attached pictures of a juvenile red-shouldered hawk (taken by my brother Lloyd Goodman), and Sherry Keller's pictures of a great blue heron, and an alligator swimming in the small lake.
I've attached pictures of two butterfly larval plants that were blooming and the butterflies who lay their eggs on them (so their caterpillars can eat the plant). The first one is the partridge pea (Chamaecrista fasciculata) which is the host plant for the cloudless sulfur and gray hairstreak butterflies, among others. The second one is a small groundcover called frogfruit (Phyla nodiflora), that is host plant to the white peacock butterfly.
